How Invisalign Works

Traditional braces work by using brackets and wires to apply pressure to the teeth. Invisalign also applies gentle pressure to the teeth, but it does so via a series of custom-made clear aligners. You wear each aligner for about two weeks, 20 – 22 hours each day. As you gradually move from one aligner to the next, your teeth progressively shift closer to their ideal positions. You should periodically visit us throughout your treatment so we can keep an eye on your oral health and the movements of your teeth. For most patients, Invisalign takes 12 – 18 months.

Indications for Invisalign

Invisalign is a great way to address most mild to moderate cases of dental misalignment. Here are a few specific examples of issues that it is commonly used to correct:

Crowded Teeth

Crowded, overlapping teeth can trap food between them and increase your risk of decay. Invisalign can gently move your teeth so each one has the space it needs to function well.

Gaps Between Teeth

Gaps between teeth might seem cute, but they can actually leave your gums vulnerable to harm. Invisalign may be able to shift your teeth closer together.

Bite Alignment

A malocclusion (bad bite), such as an overbite or underbite, could negatively affect your oral health and your smile’s appearance. Invisalign is often able to correct such issues.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign offers a number of outstanding benefits:

  • The aligners are discreet enough that they should not be the first thing others notice about your smile.
  • Because you should remove Invisalign during meals, you can feel free to eat all of your favorite foods.
  • The removability of the aligners makes it easy to maintain your oral hygiene.
  • The smooth plastic aligners should not irritate the sensitive soft tissues in your mouth.
  • The average treatment time is just 12 – 18 months, which is shorter than what you would expect with traditional metal braces.
