Jack-o-lantern

When you think of October, you probably think of jack-o-lanterns, costumes, horror movies, and a pillowcase containing a three-month supply of candy. While members of the dental community love a good scare as much as everyone else, they know it is important to keep everyone’s fangs healthy for next year. That’s why October is also Dental Hygiene Month! Here are some oral health habits that will send tooth decay and gum disease running away screaming in terror!

Slay the Plaque Monsters by Brushing Your Teeth!

Regular teeth brushing serves as the foundation for an excellent daily oral health regimen. It effectively prevents cavities and gum disease by cleaning away plaque and food debris from most of the surfaces of your teeth. Dentists advise that you brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day, once after breakfast and once before going to bed. Remember to use fluoride toothpaste with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Terrorize the Gingivitis Germs with Dental Floss!

Flossing is every bit as important for your dental health as brushing because it can eliminate plaque and food debris in places where a toothbrush simply can’t reach. The process of flossing also stimulates the gums so they can be healthy and ready to fight infections. You should floss once a day, preferably before bed. If traditional dental floss isn’t your thing, you can opt for floss picks or water flossers instead. Remember that when you floss, you leave plaque with no place to hide.

Slash Bad Breath with Antibacterial Mouthwash!

If the germs that cause oral infections are teenagers making bad decisions in a remote location, then antibacterial mouthwash is the unseen hungry presence in the bushes waiting for the right moment to pounce. Mouthwash isn’t just extra credit for hygiene perfectionists and it certainly isn’t a substitute for brushing. It is an essential part of a complete oral hygiene regimen. It can freshen your breath while killing more than 99% of the germs that cause tooth decay and gingivitis. They probably won’t even have a chance to scream.

It might not have been mad scientists who brought dentistry this far, but the Halloween season is still a great time to remember the importance of proper oral hygiene. This Dental Hygiene Month, celebrate the hard work of dentists and their staffs everywhere by taking excellent care of your teeth!
